Taken from Granite Soliel Cabernet Sauvignon 1995
Sierra Foothills, California
A hand-picked treasure from the Golden Age of the Renaissance Vineyard. (Originally Renaissance Vineyard & Winery "Premier Cuvee" Cabernet Sauvignon, now Taken From Granite Soleil) -- North Yuba, Sierra Foothills, 12.5% alcohol -- Medium to dark ruby in the glass, this wine smells of crushed herbs, bacon fat, and red berries. In the mouth the sour brightness of raspberry and red cherries mix with crushed herbs and hints of leather and cedar. Faint powdery tannins linger at the back of the mouth. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Delicious.

Cellar Selections!!!!

Hyde de Villaine Chardonnay 2016
Napa Valley, California
92 Points Vinous
The 2016 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is a very pretty wine. Gentle apricot, tangerine, spice, dried flowers and mint are all woven together. Although quite subtle, the 2016 has plenty of structure, it is just expressed in an understated manner. There is so much to admire in this pristine Chardonnay from Hyde De Villaine. Silky and polished, the 2016 will drink well upon release.

Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 2016
Rhone, France
97 Points Wine Advocate

For the 2016 Cornas, a couple of the foudres I tasted from were truly amazing, like the Sabarotte, which is imbued with the bloody-meaty essence of Cornas, velvety tannins and the Reynards Vieilles Vignes, replanted after phylloxera, which showed incredible perfumes and complexity.

From 4th of July Fireworks to Bastille Day Tastings: Visit 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits in Downtown Minneapolis This July!

Time seems to fly by faster the older you get. I just realized that 2019 is just about half over, and for the life of me, I can’t figure out where the time went...

Anyway, next Thursday is Independence Day. For those of you who are not leaving town for “the cabin” or “the lake” over the long July 4th weekend, let us remind you that most of the best places to watch the fireworks in downtown Minneapolis are VERY close to 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits. Gold Medal Park, the Stone Arch Bridge, the whole river front, and of course, the rooftops of just about every apartment building/condominium are wonderful spots to enjoy that most traditional of July 4th traditions, saying ,”OOOOOH and AHHH!” after each explosion in the night air.

Remember, this is thirsty work!! It is hopefully going to be warm next Thursday night and possibly humid. You are going to want to stay hydrated with your favorite beverage. 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits not only has an impeccably curated selection of wines, spirits and craft beer from which to choose (many of which you can taste in our store each weekend!), but we will be open on July 4th from 8 AM until 10 PM…just as the fireworks start! We spend a lot of time on the telephone on July 4th telling people that we are open til 10 PM….now YOU are in the know, so save the phone call, and come see us instead.

Please mark your calendar for Sunday, July 14th to join us for our first (annual if you make it so) Bastille Day French Wine Tasting. We aren’t going to feature wines from every district of France, but we will be showing seven very good, AFFORDABLE wines from Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Provence and Languedoc. The wines are going to be delicious, and you folks make the best company…as well as making the event exciting.

The year may be half over, but the fun is just beginning at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits! Don, Rob, Darren and Cory are constantly on the lookout for what is newest and best in adult beverages, as can be seen by the explosion of hard seltzers and ciders of every flavor that are new to the store, as well as a continuing string of terrific wines that Don has managed to negotiate wonderful low prices. If we aren’t already your go to store for beverage alcohol, we are striving to become just that!

Thank you for your business. Thank you for your trust. Thank you for your friendship and advice and counsel. Thank you for reading this!

Great Sale Wine To Wrap Up June!

Can we really be this close to the 4th of July? You could blame it on the late start to the season, but really, when has the 4th of July ever felt as though it arrived right on time?

If you feel the need to ponder these questions, we highly encourage you to do so while enjoying a nice glass of wine – preferably from this week’s sale wine – listed below!

Check out this week’s selections – and we hope to see you in our downtown Minneapolis store soon.

Remember to keep up with our Events page to be among the first to know what we’ll be serving during our in-store wine tastings every weekend!

This is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Carignan.

Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup Rose 2018

Hofer Gruner Veltliner Liter 2017
Weinviertel, Austria
The 2017 vintage for Gruner Veltliner in Austria was excellent, so we have to imagine that this always consistently delicious liter bottle offering from H & M Hofer will be among the best they've ever made. Lemon lime citrus with a slightly spritzy pizazz, it'a almost as fun to open as it is to drink. The Hofer family farm their 20 hectare estate organically in the small village of Auersthal, on the northern edge of Vienna's suburbs. Inexpensive liter bottles of Gruner Veltliner abound but they are rarely this good and made with such care and attention.
Sale $18.99/Liter
Reg. $22.99/Liter

Hofer Zweigelt Liter 2017
Weinviertel, Austria
The most popular red wine in Austria, Zweigelt is to Austria perhaps what Dornfelder is to Germany and Beaujolais is to France--an all-purpose workhorse that is as at home with a roasted chicken as it is with a hamburger. The 2017 has a cool-weather character, lean and high-toned, with freshness to spare. The perfect zippy red that can take a chill for summer picnics.
Sale $17.99/Liter
Reg. $21.99/Liter

Heidi Schrock Gelber Muskateller 2017
Burgenland, Austria
This 2017 Muskateller has a mere (and welcome) 12.5% alc and a little “natural wine” flavor; it’s juicy, leesy and dry, more the linden and chamomile aspects of Muscat and less of the orange blossom. It actually tastes more like Savignin than like Muscat, fluffy and sort of tightly rich, like bright colors on an overcast day; intense fennel and physalis. Soulful, original, and please don’t drink it too cold. -notes from Importer Terry Theise.
Sale $22.99/bottle
Reg. $25.99/bottle

Arcanum Il Fauno di Arcanum 2015
Tuscany, Italy
93 Points Wine Advocate
The 2015 Il Fauno di Arcanum is a robust and thickly layered blend of 59% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot. This wine offers terrific value, especially to those who prize soft richness and concentration in their blended Tuscan reds. This beautiful, medium to full-bodied wine would pair seamlessly with grilled or roasted meats. The warmth and sheer exuberance of the vintage will put a big smile on your face.
Sale $24.99/bottle
Reg. $34.99/bottle

Celebrate June With Some Great Wine & Spirits!

June is bustin’ out all over! There are so many great things going on throughout Minnesota the next couple of weeks that I don’t even know where to begin. We CAN tell you that just about everything calls for celebration and a visit to 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits in downtown Minneapolis …to make sure that you are properly hydrated as well as in a mellow good mood.

The league leading Minnesota Twins are in town for a nine game homestand. Just being able to say ”league leading” at this juncture of the season calls for a celebratory cocktail or glass of champagne (only if you don’t believe in jinxing the team, of course.)

Tomorrow is Flag Day, so you might think about a red, white and blue themed barbecue or picnic.

Sunday kicks off Pride Week in the Twin Cities. There is a “Family Fun Day” in St. Paul this Sunday, and of course, the BIG parade in Minneapolis next Sunday. The whole week is a celebration of….how far we have all come, and giving thanks that we finally have!

Speaking of liberation, Wednesday June 19th is “Juneteenth”…the traditional celebration of Black Liberation in America. We are, coincidentally, hosting a terrific tasting of the wines of La Rioja Alta. OK, OK…they don’t have much to do with each other, except for timing.

If, however, you are interested in tasting and learning more about some of the best wines in the World (not just Spain), then you will want to contact us either at info@1010wws.com or by phone at (612)339-4040 to make your reservation for this event. As usual, the tasting begins at 6:30 PM and the cost of a ticket is $25.00, which we will refund against any purchase of La Rioja Alta wines you might make at the tasting.

We are planning on breaking with habit regarding Sunday tastings at the store. Sunday, July 14th is the 230th Anniversary of the storming of the Bastille and the beginning of the French Revolution. Bastille Day is to France what July 4th is to Americans. The French commitment to wines of quality is well more than 230 years old. For a variety of reasons, the French example is the standard by which so many wines are judged even today. In the spirit of French independence from monarchy and in honor of the quality of French wines, we thought we would do a Bastille Day tasting, from 2:00 to 4:30.

The problem with doing a tasting in honor of France is that....well...we limit our tastings to six wines. We have to include a Champagne, so we picked Laurent-Perrier La Cuvee. We include Chateau Latour-Martillac Blanc because we think White Bordeaux wines are under appreciated. Chateau LaRose Trintaudon Haut-Medoc because it has always been a Bordeaux favorite. Gerard Bertrand Cigalus Blanc because the South of France produces so much wine...and this one is stunning. We thought the Domaine Rene LeClerc Bourgogne Rouge was terrific...and affordable. Last but not least, we would never have heard the end of it from my daughter Ann if we had not included Fleurs de Prairie Rose'.

We apologize for not including so many wines from so many important regions....but that is France....and that is why we love its wines!

Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages 2014

The flagship Cinq Cepages is terrific in 2014. Rich, ample and unctuous, the 2014 offers all the richness that is such a signature of this bottling, but with better integration of tannin and finer balance than I can remember seeing in some time. 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits Is Here to Fill Downtown Minneapolis’ Summer Sippin’ Needs!

Memorial Day is in the rearview mirror (and what a washout THAT was!), so it must be Summertime in Downtown Minneapolis. Bunches of our customers seem to be pinching themselves to make sure that the dream season the Twins are enjoying isn’t just that…a dream. The Gopher softball team really is living a dream. Think of it…the College World Series for the first time EVER! Go Gophers!

At 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits we continue to be optimistic about Summer, 2019. We are going to get our fill of barbecuing, boating, camping, golf, tennis and picnics. Starting today warm weather is bound to stay soon. We are going to need to stock up on craft beer, wine and spirits for all the fun outdoor events that define Summer in Minnesota.

In that spirit of optimism, we have done our part. The store is fully stocked with both old standards, as well as the cutting edge of exciting new products. What is going on today in the Craft Beer business is…beyond amazing. Darren and Cory, our two craft beer specialists, bring invaluable knowledge of this new business to our store every day. They are truly invaluable assets to our business! If you are the least bit interested in the myriad of new types and flavor combinations that have burst upon the malt beverage scene recently, then there is no greater source of information than our two craft beer specialists. Take advantage of them, the only thing they like better than talking about all the new trends in beer is to be tasting them! They will steer you to all manner of new taste sensations that will be both fun and flavorful.

The truth be known, the best compliment, the biggest rush for any of us at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits is when YOU come back and tell us how the product we suggested was just perfect for your event. The fact that you relied on our judgement and it worked for you is just so gratifying. It happens all the time, but it never gets old. Thank you!

The sheer volume of beverages that are available for sale today can be overwhelming for any consumer. Our promise to you is that one or more of us has tasted almost every single item in the store before we placed it. When it comes to vintage wines, we taste them every year. This may be overkill, but you are entitled to know that when you make a purchase in our store, the product has passed muster with US before we offer it to you. Our goal is that you feel that you don’t have to know too much about wines, spirits and beers because you rely on us! Our business is built on establishing that trust with you, our valuable customers.

So, thank you for trusting us. Thank you for your business. Thank you for your friendship and advice. Thanks for reading this!

Castano Monastrell 2016
Yecla, Spain
90 Points Wine Advocate

I hadn't encountered their entry-level, young and unoaked Monastrell for a while, but I tasted the 2016 Monastrell, which fermented in stainless steel and was kept in concrete vats for four to six months. They used some 25% to 30% full clusters in the vinification, and I've never smelled anything like this from Castaño. This is floral and fresh, elegant and balanced, with moderate extraction, ripe tannins and a very pleasant mouthfeel with clean, focused flavors. This is almost too serious for the price. Wow! In the future, they might do some full clusters; I tasted an experimental lot with 100% full clusters in 2016, and the wine was amazing.
Sale $7.99/bottle
Reg. $11.99/bottle

Domaine du Vissoux Chremette Saint-Amour 2017
Burgundy, France
92+ Points Wine Advocate
The 2017 Saint-Amour Les Champs-Grilles is a very promising young wine, unfurling in the glass with notes of rose hip, sweet red cherries and orange rind. On the palate, its medium-bodied, fine-boned and stony, with good concentration and bright acids.
$29.99/bottle

Domaine Prebende Beaujolais 2017
Burgundy, France
91 Points James Suckling
Impressive depth of rich raspberries and cherries here with a wealth of gently grainy tannins. Drink or hold.

De Wetshof Bon Vallon Chardonnay 2018
Robertson, South Africa
92 Points Wine Spectator
A flash of matchstick gives way quickly to a bright core of green and yellow apple flavors laced liberally with honeysuckle and verbena notes through the nicely detailed finish. Very, very solid. Drink now through 2021.
Sale $17.99/bottle
Reg. $19.99/bottle

Idlewild Flora & Fauna Red Wine 2018
California
Dark cherry, fresh soil, dried herbs, violets, and graphite are highlights of the aromas. The mouth feel is a joyful interplay of brightness with just enough chewy bass notes before the seriousness kicks in with a firm acid and tannin balance on the finish.
Sale $21.99/bottle
Reg. $26.99/bottle

Tenuta di Arceno Chianti Classico Riserva 2015
Tuscany, Italy
94 Points Wine Advocate
Warm aromas of dark fruit, potting soil and moist chewing tobacco rise from the bouquet of the 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva. This is an extremely territory-driven wine that emits aromas that recall the red clay soils and warm summer breezes of the Castelnuovo Berardenga area to the southern side of the Chianti Classico appellation. This is a soft and enriched red wine (made with 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) that produces sweet textural richness and plenty of ripe fruit packed within that generous fiber.
Sale $24.99/bottle
Reg. $34.99/bottle

Turley Old Vine Zinfandel 2016
Napa Valley, California
91 Points Wine Advocate
One of Turley's emblematic bottlings, the 2016 Zinfandel Old Vines exhibits a lovely bouquet of raspberries, plums, cherries and licorice. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with rich structuring tannins, a generous core of fleshy fruit and a long, flavorful finish.

White Rose Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2015
Willamette Valley, Oregon
92 Points Vinous

Light ruby-red. Deeply perfumed aromas of fresh dark fruits, incense and Asian spices pick up a minerally element with aeration. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering sappy blackberry, cola and violet pastille flavors that show very good focus and spicy lift. Conveys a suave mix of power and finesse and finishes very long and smoky, with a hint of vanilla and silky tannins lending shape and grip.
Sale $34.99/bottle
Reg. $39.99/bottle

Fattoria la Massa Giorgio Primo 2013
Tuscany, Italy
97 Points Wine Advocate
This standout wine brings Fattoria la Massa to a new level of accomplishment and opens an exciting new chapter of possibility. The 2013 Giorgio Primo (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot) is dark and impenetrable on first impact. The aromas accelerate slowly and grow evenly in power and intensity after a few quick swirls of the glass. The bouquet peels back with dark fruit aromas, baking spice and Mediterranean herb. The effect is seamless and smooth. A velvety texture is accented by full-bodied richness and just enough freshness to keep the palate energized. And, of course, this is just the beginning of a long cellar life.

Bootlegs Are This Year’s Summer Cocktail in Minneapolis!

Wow! We are more than halfway through the month of May. Memorial Day is a week from today….and then….its SUMMERTIME in downtown Minneapolis!!!!

You know what that means, don’t you? Summertime means cold beer, rose’ and white wine, except when you are grilling a steak or a couple of racks of ribs and you need a big red wine to complement your meal. Summertime means cocktails outdoors and if you are a true blue Minnesotan, it might mean a Bootleg!

What is a Bootleg you ask?

A Bootleg is all about limeade, lemonade, mint, club soda, garnish, a lot of ice in a tall glass….and, of course, your favorite spirit (usually vodka?). A Bootleg is not impossible to make, but a good one takes talent.

Apparently, nobody outside of Minnesota had ever HEARD of a Bootleg. That is just another reason to be proud of being a native!!

Digression: We believe in premixed cocktails. Whether we are talking about Manhattans from High West or Jefferson, or Old Fashioneds from Dashfire or Crooked Water…you cannot make a cocktail at home from scratch as well as these folks make them at the distillery. The proportions are always consistent…AND the distillers, in many cases, barrel age the ingredients together so that the flavors are truly integrated and the cocktails are…..PERFECT!!

We are telling you this because we just brought in a premixed Bootleg from Tattersall, our closest local distillery. Can you tell that we LOVE Bootlegs?? A 750ml Tattersall Bootleg is on special at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits for $26.99. The only experiment you have to make is how much soda to add for the perfect, Minnesota born, refresher.

Other than that, we are just so excited that Summer is upon us, and of course that the Twins are in first place in their division. We hope you are, as well, and we really hope that you will include us at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits and allow us to help you plan your Summer activities with all the best things to drink…including Bootlegs.

Finally, before the Memorial Day anticipation gets too heady, we had better remind you to visit us this weekend for one last craft beer, wine and spirits tasting - before we get to June.

Thanks for everything you do for us. Thanks for reading this!
