Ferrari Carano Fume Blanc 2017
Sonoma, California
This wine has delicious aromas and flavors of pink grapefruit, lemongrass, lychee, peach, pear, honeydew melon, orange blossom, pineapple, guava and a touch of minerality. The Fumé Blanc has bright acidity and crisp freshness from the cool, stainless steel tank fermentation, while the subtle oak character from neutral French oak barrels adds body, complexity and depth.

Evodia Garnacha 2016
Calatayud, Spain
91 Points Jeb Dunnuck
Another project between Eric Solomon and the Roussillon’s Jean-Marc Lafage, the 2016 Evodia comes from higher elevation vineyards and is mostly Garnacha (there’s 5% Syrah) aged in a mix of tank and demi-muids. This deep ruby/purple colored is a gorgeous, naked expression of Grenache that just knocks it out of the park. Blackberries, blueberries, pepper, licorice and hints of asphalt all emerge from this plump, sexy, opulent, and shockingly concentrated wine that has incredible charm and character. It’s the best 10-dollar bottle of wine I've tasted in years.

Andezon Cotes du Rhone 2016
Rhone, France
91 Points Wine Advocate
Long-time American readers should already know this wine, as it has been a staple in the Eric Solomon portfolio for more than a decade. The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Andezon is 100% Syrah, aged entirely in tank. It's a lush, medium to full-bodied wine bursting with ripe blackberries and blueberries. No, it doesn't have the peppery spice of Syrah from the northern Rhône, but it does have enough cola-like spicy complexity to warrant an outstanding rating. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.

Stadt Krems Gruner Veltliner 2017
Kremstal, Austria
Fresh and fruity, with aromas reminiscent of white currant, citrus fruits and "veltliner-pfefferl" or white pepper. The flavors on the palate are consistent with the aromas and the finish is fresh and crisp. A classic Grüner Veltliner from Kremstal, not too heavy but not too light. A staff favorite.

La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza 2009
Rioja, Spain
93+ Points Wine Advocate
The current vintage of one of the flagship wines from La Rioja Alta is the 2009 Viña Ardanza Reserva, the second year it has contained 20% Garnacha grapes from their estate vineyards in La Pedriza in the village of Tudelilla in Rioja Baja. The Tempranillo comes from vineyards averaging 30 years of age in Fuenmayor and Cenicero. The hand-harvested bunches were sorted and put in boxes, transferred to the winery at 14 degrees Celsius to be destemmed and crushed, then the grapes fermented in stainless steel, including malolactic. The two varieties were aged separately, 36 months in used American oak barrels for Tempranillo and 30 months for Garnacha, and racked every six months. It was initially closed, shy and serious, riper and a little darker than the 2008 but still very balanced, serious and harmonious. The palate combines power with elegance, with some tannins, focused flavors, some chalky texture and a rustic touch that gives it character.

Considering that this is the producer’s simplest red, it has an astonishing stature and sophistication. Nuances of tobacco and soy sauce as well as ripe plums and a great balance of fruit and precisely crafted dry tannins and a firm, but polished finish. Drink or hold.

A perennial overachiever, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone les Deux Albions continues that run. Garrigue notes accent blueberry fruit in this full-bodied, plush wine. Loaded with hints of cherries and stone fruit, it's a cornucopia of ripe fruit waiting to be slurped down, velvety and long on the finish.

Yangarra Old Vine Grenache 2014
Mclaren Vale, Australia
94 Points James Suckling

A stunning old-vine rendering of grenache from a sandy outcrop of McLaren Vale, this has a very powerful yet composed feel to it. The nose has an almost brooding and cryptic air about it. It floats around in a spice-infused cloud of cloves, pepper and cinnamon; it's gently tarry, offering up red plums and dark-berry aromas that are concentrated and build momentum with air. Sturdy, clean-cut tannins deliver staggering fruit concentration with a wealth of ripe dark-cherry and plum flavors. Terrific length. This has much on offer now and much to come in time. Outstanding value.

Arterberry Maresh Old Vines Pinot Noir 2016

This is the first non-vineyard designate made by Jim Maresh. Pale to medium ruby in color, the 2016 Pinot Noir Old Vines has a lovely pure nose of pink peppercorn, dried black tea leaves, red and black licorice and violets with dried cranberries, red cherries and layers and layers of spice. Medium to full-bodied, it has amazing concentration of flavor in the mouth, blossoming out to pure red fruits and spicy layers, with cinnamon and autumn leaves accents, very fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity, finishing very, very long with tons of earth-laced fruit. Wow!

Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2012
Tuscany, Italy
95 Points Wine Advocate
From the second the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino pours into the glass, you know you are in for something special. The wine is darkly saturated and rich in appearance. The quality of fruit is vibrant and rich. This is a healthy, generous and exuberant Brunello with dark density and succulent fruit flavors that are followed by integrated spice and tobacco. The balance is impressive and one thing you get here is fresh acidity. This is one of the year's best Brunellos.

Deep ruby/purple-colored, notes of sweet creme de cassis, blackberry, charcoal and toast are present in the subtle but intense aromatics.
